What is a COC for Belgium?

A Certificate of Conformity is a document required to register a car in Belgium that was made abroad. If you’re looking to move to Belgium, or if you are visiting for a long period of time and want to take your vehicle with you, it is likely that you will need a Certificate of Conformity.

In EU Law, a COC (Certificate of Conformity) is required as a declaration of conformity with the type approval of the European Commission. In short, the Certificate of Conformity guarantees the homogeneity of goods in the EU that are subject to registration, including passenger vehicles (M1), light goods vehicles (N1), and motorcycles (L). In Belgium, a COC may have three different names, depending on the language of the area you are in. In French, a COC is known as a certificat de conformité, in German a COC Papiere and in Dutch, a certificaat van overeenstemming.

How to get a Certificate of Conformity in Belgium

When importing your vehicle from one European country to Belgium you need to register your vehicle with the Belgian Vehicle Registration Service (DIV.) The DIV are responsible for the registration of motorbikes, cars, and trailers over 750kg. When registering with the DIV, you will receive a certificate of registration and a licence plate for your vehicle. It is for this process that you will need a COC Belgium.

In Belgium, the registration plate that you display on your vehicle is registered to the owner of the vehicle rather than the specific vehicle that you are driving. This means that you can transfer this plate to other vehicles if you were to purchase a new vehicle while you were in Belgium. Because the registration plate is assigned to an individual, rather than the vehicle, you are required to provide specific documentation when applying for a registration plate in Belgium such as: 

• Residency permit showing a permanent address in Belgium
• Proof of purchase for the vehicle to be imported
• Previous registration documents of the vehicle
