What Are the Signs of Vehicle Registration Fraud?
Occasionally, it is not unusual to receive letters or mail that has been incorrectly addressed. We can pass this off as a simple mistake.
But suppose you regularly receive official letters from DVLA or other associated organisations to your address but are not the named recipient of the letter. In that case, you may be experiencing vehicle registration fraud.
Sometimes, you may even receive letters addressed to you, but the information inside is incorrect. If you have been receiving parking tickets and fines for a vehicle you do not own, a car that is not yours may have been registered to your name and address.
This is vehicle registration fraud.
How and Why Does Vehicle Registration Fraud Happen?
It is, unfortunately, possible for someone you do not know to buy a car and then register it to your name and address.
Anyone can download and apply for a vehicle registration certificate (V62) from the DVLA. Unfortunately, it is quite a simple process, and the victims of vehicle registration fraud often do not realise it until they receive multiple letters, fines, or parking tickets.
This is concerning for the victims of vehicle registration fraud, and many wonder what steps to take next.
How to Report Vehicle Registration Fraud
If you are receiving letters or fines for a vehicle you do not own, you should contact the DVLA.
You should write to any organisations or companies that you are receiving letters from explaining that you are not the vehicle owner, providing them with as much evidence as possible, and ensuring that you only send copies of documents and keep the originals.
If you were previously the owner of the vehicle
If you used to own the vehicle but have sold it to someone else, you should send the organisation a copy of the letter that the DVLA sent you when you sold the vehicle. This will help to confirm that you are no longer the registered keeper of the vehicle.
If you do not have the letter from the DVLA
Write to the DVLA and ask for proof that you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle anymore.
In your letter to the DVLA, you should include:
- the vehicle registration number, make, and model
- the exact date of sale or transfer
- the name and address of the person you sold or transferred it to
The DVLA should send you a replacement letter within 4 weeks.

You never owned the vehicle
If you have never been the registered keeper of the vehicle, you should write to the DVLA and ask for proof that you are not the registered keeper.
Be sure to give them as much information about the vehicle as possible.
The DVLA will update their records and send a letter of confirmation to you within 4 weeks.
