Certificate of Conformity for Chinese Cars (BYD, MG, NIO…)

Short answer: Chinese cars sold officially in the EU – for example BYD, MG, Omoda, Jaecoo, Leapmotor, Lynk & Co, NIO, Zeekr, XPeng and Polestar – are type-approved for the European market and therefore have an EU certificate of conformity (COC). You need it to register the car in another EU country. A car imported directly from China, built to Chinese specifications, has no EU COC.

Which Chinese cars have a COC?

A COC exists only for a vehicle built to an EU-approved type. In practice:

  • Bought new in an EU country from an official dealer: the car is an EU version and has a COC. If the paper is missing, the manufacturer can issue an official duplicate.
  • Imported privately from China (or another non-EU market): the car was built to that market’s specifications. There is no EU COC, and registration usually requires an individual vehicle approval.
  • Bought used in another EU country: if it was first registered in the EU, it is almost always an EU version – a COC can be ordered with the VIN.

How to check that your car is an EU version

  1. Type plate: look for an EU type-approval number starting with “e” and a number (for example e92018/858…). If it is there, the car was approved for the EU.
  2. Registration document: a car already registered in an EU country is, in almost all cases, an EU version.
  3. VIN check: our COC availability check tells you whether a COC can be issued for your vehicle.

FAQ

Is there an EU certificate of conformity for the Omoda 5? Yes, for Omoda 5 and Omoda E5 vehicles built for the European market. The COC is issued for the specific vehicle by its VIN.

Can I get a COC for a BYD Atto 3 to register it in Belgium or another EU country? Yes, if the car is an EU version – for example bought new or used in an EU country. The COC is valid for registration in all EU member states.

Does the NIO ET5 have an EU type approval? Yes, NIO models sold in Europe, such as the ET5, are EU type-approved, so a certificate of conformity can be issued for them.

What if my Chinese car was imported directly from China? Then it was built to Chinese specifications and has no EU COC. Registration in the EU usually requires an individual vehicle approval at the national authority.

How much does a COC for a Chinese car cost? It depends on the manufacturer. For brands we offer on request, we confirm the price for your VIN before you order.
