What is a COC Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, a COC is called a Certificate of Origin (CVO) or a Certificaat Van Overeenstemming.

A COC, or a Certificate of Conformity, is a document required to register a car from abroad in the Netherlands. If you’re looking to move to the Netherlands permanently, or for long periods of time, and want to take your car with you, it’s very probable that you will need to show a COC.

In EU Law, a COC (Certificate of Conformity) is required as a declaration of conformity with the type approval of the European Commission. In short, the Certificate of Conformity guarantees the homogeneity of goods in the EU that are subject to registration, including passenger vehicles (M1), light goods vehicles (N1), and motorcycles (L). EUROCOC can get a COC for all of these vehicle types to help you in your move to the Netherlands.

When do I need a Certificate of Conformity (COC) for the Netherlands?

When you travel to the Netherlands and want to bring your car for a long period of time, you may need to get a Certificate of Conformity (COC) in the Netherlands. It may be that you already have had your unregistered car in the Netherlands for a short period of time. In this case, you are likely to need a COC document to register it with the Dutch authorities for Dutch registration or transit plates. Whatever you need COC for, EUROCOC can help.

How to get a Certificate of Conformity in the Netherlands

When you import your vehicle from one EU country to the Netherlands, in addition to your COC, you will need to make an appointment to register your vehicle at an RDW inspection station in the Netherlands. If you are arriving in the Netherlands in your vehicle, then you must arrange to have a ‘One-Day Registration Number’ for your vehicle.

When you attend the inspection, you must have with you the following:

  • The complete original foreign registration certificate of your vehicle
  • Proof of identity
  • The COC certificate.

It is also likely that to continue to drive your vehicle within the Netherlands, as well as a COC, you will need to register for the MOT of the vehicle to be taken over by the Dutch authorities, insure your vehicle for civil liability, and have new license plates made at a registered manufacturer in the Netherlands. More information can be found here.

You also need a COC when you are exporting a vehicle from the Netherlands to another country within the EU. A vehicle with a European approval can usually be exported quite easily from the Netherlands. A COC must be present with the vehicle when exporting it from the Netherlands to another EU country. More information on how to export a vehicle from the Netherlands can be found on the RDW website here
