If you want to get a car into Belgium, you need to register it and get a Belgium number plate to enable you to drive it legally on Belgium roads.

Here’s a guide on how you can register your vehicle for a Belgium license plate.

How Does The Belgium Car Registration System Work?

You must register your used or new vehicle in Belgium within 3 months of purchase, or after importing your vehicle into Belgium.

If you buy a vehicle (new or used) from Belgium, remember to show the ‘Demande d`immatriculation’ and include your Belgian address on the original invoice.

Also, once you arrive in Belgium with a vehicle purchased abroad, you will need to go to a customs office to declare that you are importing the vehicle into Belgium.

The customs official immediately attaches a 705 sticker to the pink application form – the form you fill when registering your vehicle to get Belgium license plates – to indicate that the vehicle was imported.

To register your vehicle for a Belgium number plate, you will need to provide the following original documents:

  • Valid ID.
  • European Certificate of Conformity (COC):

A European Certificate of Conformity (COC) is a document assigned by the vehicle’s manufacturer to certify that the vehicle meets the required European traffic standards.

EUROCOC can help you to request a Certificate of Conformity and deliver it quickly to you, to speed up the whole process.

  • Original invoice:

This should contain the car dealer’s name and address, the name and address (a private Belgian address) of the person who purchased the car, the date of purchase, invoice number, purchase price, and the chassis number (VIN number).

  • A valid green insurance card:

This should contain a name (must be in the sponsor’s name), date (must retain more than a month of range), chassis number (must be the same on all the documents), and a Belgian address.

  • Original registration documents (for previously registered vehicles)

This is a technical inspection that ensures that your vehicle is in good condition. The inspection focuses on vehicle parts like the chassis, brakes, seat belts, and headlights.

After the whole procedure with customs service and the technical inspection, the car should be registered with the Department for the Registration of Vehicles (DIV).

To complete the registration, you will need the pink registration application received from customs or the insurance company and the original registration certificate if the vehicle is already registered.

How To Apply For Belgium Number Plates?

To register your vehicle to get a Belgium number plate, you will need to use the pink application form entitled ‘Registration Application’. After completing this form, carefully and accurately return it to DIV. Once you have returned this data to DIV, you will receive a Certificate of Enrollment.

You will typically receive your new Belgium license plate number 10 days after your application has been processed.

Fees For Belgian Number Plates

The rear Belgium plate, registration, and administration fee is €35 and must be paid in cash only on the first day of registration. Also, the front Belgium plate costs €10, making a total of €45.

What Do Belgium Car Number Plates Look Like?

The Belgium number plate has red letters and numbers on a white background. The EU flag, which is a blue stripe with 12 yellow stars in a circle, is located at the left corner of the Belgium plate.

Below the flag is the letter ‘B’, which is the international vehicle registration code for Belgium.

Most European countries, including Belgium, have a common license plate size of 520 mm x 110 mm (20.5 inches x 4.3 inches), including trucks and buses.

Format Of Belgium Number Plates

The numbers on the most recent Belgium plates contain three groups of characters, each separated by a hyphen.

The first group is a numeric, followed by a group of three letters, and then a group of three numbers.

The general format is ‘1-AAA-111’.

What Types Of Belgium License Plates Exist?

Special Belgium license plates include plates for military, and governmental personnel, trailer plates, for members of the royal family, European organizations, and Belgium plates for diplomats four people working with international organizations, and car dealers.

Take for example people working at EUROCONTROL get to have their Belgium number plates in blue and inscribed with the word ‘Euro’.

Belgium Custom Number Plates

Car owners can customize their Belgium number plate, however, the custom Belgium plates must include at least one letter and cannot copy the special characters, or rather number combinations reserved for special Belgium license plates, like that for the diplomats and the officials.

Can I Change My Belgian Number Plate?

Belgium license plates can be transferred from the owner’s previous vehicle to the new vehicle. The rear Belgium plates are usually supplied by the state while the front Belgium plates are usually supplied by the owner.
