If you are a resident of Denmark, for you to own and drive a car within the country, the vehicle needs to be registered and equipped with Denmark license plates. Also, you must have car insurance in Denmark.

The European Certificate of Conformity (COC) is a certificate that ensures that the vehicle corresponds with European traffic laws.

What Do Danish Car Number Plates Look Like?

The general appearance for private Denmark plates comprises black characters on a white background.

In Denmark, car buyers can choose license plates with or without EU stripes.

Danish license plates that have the EU flag which is a blue stripe with 12 yellow stars also have the letters, ‘DK’, which is the country code.

However, if your Danish-registered vehicle does not have an EU-striped Danish plate, it must have an accepted oval-shaped DK sign when driving outside the country.

Format Of Danish Number Plates

Danish license plates usually consist of 2 letters and 5 digits. This combination is just a serial number and has nothing to do with geographic location, but the numbers have a series of numbers based on vehicle type.

Danish number plates from 2012 onwards have random characters, giving a higher number of combinations. For rectangular-shaped plates on private cars, the five-digit number ranges from 20000 to 59999.

What Types Of Danish License Plates Exist?

There are special Danish number plates that can be given upon request and provision of certain documents.

These unique Danish license plates are usually for temporary plate owners, diplomats, royal families, electric car owners, and local administrators and have the exclusivity to display certain distinct characters.

The Danish number plate can be customized. The custom Danish plates come in black lettering on a yellow background. You also get to choose the text your danish plates will carry. The custom Danish number plates also have the EU flag, along with the country code, ‘DK’.
