We’ll provide an overview of all the documents required for vehicle registration in Cyprus, and the procedure for checking vehicle registration information for cars registered in the country. Whether you have recently bought a Cypriot vehicle or are looking to re-register your own car in Cyprus following your relocation, you’ll find all you need to know right here.

Why Is Registration Important?

Registering a vehicle correctly in Cyprus when you bring it from another country is crucial to ensure you always comply with Cypriot legal requirements and regulations.

The correct registration in your name helps authorities to identify and track cars on the road.  Vehicle registration also shows that your car or motorbike meets Cypriot safety, emissions, and technical standards. Ultimately, registering your car currently means you contribute to a safer environment on the roads in Cyprus and makes sure your car can be identified if there’s ever an issue.

When Must I Register a Vehicle in Cyprus?

If you’re importing a vehicle from another country to Cyprus, you must register it correctly with the relevant authorities. If you are staying in Cyprus and intend only to use your car for a short period of time, you may register your vehicle as temporarily imported

Be aware – the temporary importation status still carries fees and you must still follow a registration process while your vehicle is in the country. The vehicle must then leave Cyprus once the temporary registration expires, or be permanently registered in the country. This importation and exportation process is expensive and might not be the most efficient registration process for your situation.

The process, fees due, and documentation required for the importation of your vehicle depend on the type of vehicle you drive, the emissions and fuel type of your vehicle, and the vehicle’s country of origin. You can find out more about the relevant fees and taxes that are due for each type of importation here. On the Cypriot Government website you can find more information about the complete process of registering your vehicle.
